Lakes for Living, Lakes for Life: Introduction to web site
"Lake experts have been united by a common purpose and passion to share their knowledge and experience, setting the standard for looking after our lakes now and in the future."
Tony Dean (Environment Agency North West Regional Director)
The Lakes for Living, Lakes for Life international conference held in Windermere during May, brought together lake experts and key decision makers in lake catchment management to grapple with the thorny problem of finding common ground and a way to achieve high quality lakes for future generations. We learnt how important it is that everyone – whether coming from an economic, environmental or social / community stance, should understand other perspectives. Regardless of role, we have to move together through partnership and understanding.
Following thought-provoking key note speakers from each of the three legs of sustainable development and others who represented a more overall view, it was the turn of the delegates became the main contributors. Through discussions in workshops, on-site debates with local practitioners, a question and answer session and a quick fire review of some major international developments our thinking was challenged and future plans were sparked.
As a result, the revised website offers not only a review and reminder to delegates, but allows some discussion and presentation detail of the other workshops and tours going on in parallel. For those who could not attend but have a strong association with (and interest in) lake catchment issues, we hope the points of ‘practice’ collated from the workshop and study tour outputs provide a useful toolbox for solving some of your own lake catchment problems.
The provision of details of the speakers and their presentations who gave us such a wide range of scenarios will provide sound advice and expand your network of lake expertise.
We went to the conference with a belief that sustainable lakes can only come through quality communications and came away with that message soundly reinforced…but with some new ideas on how to achieve that goal. We hope the following pages will add positively to our ability to communicate effectively around this increasingly important yet challenged resource.
To those of you who joined us, thank you for your valued input and companionship. And to those who could not make it on this occasion, please explore the site and use as a source of information, a directory of expertise and a catalyst for action.
It’s been a pleasure organising this event on your behalf. Please keep in touch.
